William Newman

William Newman a B.Sc(Computer Science) graduate from the University of Cape Town was a cyclist in the SA Cycling Board fold under the auspices of SACOS where he was a staunch supporter of the non-racial cause. He was the best cyclist in the SACOS fold holding numerous National and Provincial titles on the Road and Track. He captained the SACOS team at the historic SACOS Sports Festival in 1982. Despite his many sporting achievements he ranks his most satisfying achievement as “knowing that our sacrifices and dedication to the non-racial cause was rewarded with the demise of apartheid in the early nineties. This set us on the road to democracy ensuring equal opportunity for all.”
While being the top SACOS cyclist, he held numerous administrative posts from club and Provincial secretary to Race organiser. It is ironic that he now leads the National Cycling Federation whose international recognition he vehemently opposed during the SACOS days. Having been deprived of international competition during his prime, he went on to represent South Africa at the Masters World Track Championships on numerous occasions. He also served as National team manager on numerous occasions.
The Athlete Performance Pathways Programme Certificate course at the Manchester Business School is one of the many courses he attended.
Besides being President of Cycling South Africa, he is part of the Confederation of African Cycling Management Committee as well as a member of the UCI Track Commission.
He leads with the motto:
“Lead with passion, execute with diligence”
