Humbulani Ephraim Nematswerani, MBChB,MMedSc,DTM&H,DOH – Sports Physician

Dr Nematswerani was born and bred in Duthuni Village just outside Thohoyandou in Limpopo Province. Following his matriculation at Mbilwi High School he went on to complete his MBChB and MMedSc degrees at the University of Kwazulu-Natal, formerly known as the University of Natal, Durban. As a traveling Sports Physician, he followed that up with a Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene as well as a Certificate in Travel Medicine.

Dr Nematswerani sits on the Appeal Board of the South African Institute for Drug-free Sport, is a Medical Instructor for the South African Football Association and also a trained Confederation of African Football medical instructor.

He spent 12 years as SAFA national team doctor, from 2000 – 2012, and was Bafana Bafana team doctor during the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup and the 2010 FIFA World Cup. He was Chief Medical Officer for Team SA during the 2005 World Games in Duisburg, Germany, and accompanied Team SA to several Games including the 2008 Beijing Olympics. His highlight as a traveling Sports Physician was winning a gold medal with the National Wheelchair Basketball team during the 2007 Algiers All Africa Games.

He was team doctor of Moroka Swallows FC for more than 17 years.

Dr Nematswerani’s well-researched original article “A comparison of the nature and severity of injuries in younger and older professional soccer players” was published in the SAJSM in September 2005.

He was a proud recipient of the “Merit Award for services to South African Football” during the SASMA Conference in 2011.

Currently, he runs Sports Medicine/Travel Medicine practices at both Busamed Modderfontein and Life Brenthurst Private Hospitals in Linbro Park and Parktown respectively.
