Team SA for 2019 World Para Swimming Championships in London announced

SASCOC has announced a strong team to represent South Africa at the 2019 Allianz World Para Swimming Championships being held in London from 9 to 15 September 2019.

The World Para Championships is an important event as it is a major qualification event for slots leading up to the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.

The lean team is a blend of swimmers who have international experience in various renowned events such as the World Championships and Paralympic Games.

Paralympic and multiple world champs medalist, Hendri Herbst is the most senior athlete in the squad. He won a bronze in the 100m Freestyle S11 event at the 2012 Paralympic Games in London and was part of the 2016 Paralympic Games team in Rio de Janeiro. The team also includes Christian Sadie and Franco Smit who were medal winners from the previous World Para Swimming Championships held in Mexico City in 2017.

Though she did not medal, Alani Ferreira, was also in the squad at the 2016 Paralympic Games.

The athletes have all attained the required qualification standard set out by World Para Swimming and have also met the requirements of Swimming South Africa.

Tadhg Slattery, a former multiple Paralympic swimmer, World Championships medallist and full time Para coach together with Theo Verster, coach for the last three Paralympic teams and World Championships will accompany the team.

“We wish the team well on their quest to qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. We are extremely pleased to see the growth of Tadhg Slattery into the coaching role since retiring as one of our most accomplished para swimmers.

“A massive thank you to our Paralympic partners Toyota, Citibank, National Lotteries Commission and the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture without whom, our athletes would not be able to participate at these championships,” said SASCOC President, Gideon Sam.
