Rossouw is SA’s best cadet at worlds

By Mark Etheridge

Francois Rossouw was best of the South Africans in action at the 2017 Cadet World Championships wrestling event in Greece.

Rossouw was one of four South African grapplers in action, and he went on to finish fifth against the world’s best young cadets.

He lost his first round contest to a Japanese opponent, but bounced right back to beat his Bulgarian rival Ivan Stiliyan 4-3 in his next match-up.

Unfortunately, his American opponent was too strong in the bronze-medal match, but Rossouw will be encouraged at his progress to reach this point after years of hard work.

Next best for the rainbow nation was Edrich Nortje, who placed ninth overall in his weight division.

He emerged victorious from his first match, beating his Saudi Arabian opponent with a fall, but then lost his second match against Turkey.

Then Ruan Botha lost his first-round match against an Armenian and was eliminated from the competition after his opponent failed to advance to the third round. That means Botha placed 21st.

Also losing his first match, was Jacques Kriel, in his case against the eventual world champion. Kriel also lost his first repechage match against a stronger and more experienced Ukrainian, and placed 23rd.

Meanwhile, good news and a welcome boost for wrestling in South Africa is the announcement that the country will host this year’s Commonwealth Wrestling Championships.

This takes place from 14-17 December, and the venue is Carnival City Big Top Arena, in Brakpan on the East Rand.

Among international countries invited to participate from the myriad of Commonwealth nations will be wrestling giants Australia, Canada, Great Britain, India, Pakistan, New Zealand, Nigeria and Wales.

Coming a few months before next year’s Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia, it’s an extremely important fixture on the global calendar.

So Brakpan will be an important opportunity in terms of Gold Coast qualifying.

It’s busy times for wrestling with next week seeing the national youth championships, while there are also national trials ahead of the Commonwealth Championships.
