All aboard for launch of new TSL competition

The stage is set, the boats rigged and everything is on track for Saturday’s launch of the new national Team Sailing League (TSL).

Sailing teams from across the country have arrived in Cape Town for the launch that takes place at Milnerton Aquatic Club.

‘This league has been months and months in the planning, and we’re so excited that everything has come together so well and that we’re now ready for tomorrow’s launch,’ said SA Sailing chairman Peter Hall.

‘I really do believe that this could be a turning point for the sport in our country. The TSL aims to draw in new participants who in the past would not have given sailing a go, and also has the goal of reigniting the passion in our current sailors by introducing the competitive team element.

‘We are looking forward to a great day on Saturday as we celebrate the launch. We’ll be seeing some spectacular head-to-head racing out on the water and we expect it to be a real family vibe as there are plenty of other activities to entertain the kids, a local band playing in the evening, and food offerings available to the public.’

The TSL will essentially be split into four tournaments: a Youth Team Sailing League, an Inter-club Sailing League, a Corporate Challenge and a Women’s Sailing League – targeting specifically identified areas in which the sport can expand and develop.

Anyone keen to find out what team sailing is all about, or to rub shoulders with the county’s Olympic sailors who will also be at the launch, is encouraged to join in a day of fun activities at Milnerton Aquatic Club on Saturday, as different groups will go head-to-head in a demonstration of what can be expected in the national league.

Local radio station One FM will also be broadcasting from the venue on the day.

With the support of the National Lotteries Commission and Sports and Recreation South Africa, SA Sailing have commissioned the building of 28 boats which are easy and fun to sail and maintain and affordable but robust, specifically for the TSL. These will be all be in action on Saturday.
