South Africa’s Esti van Tonder returns home a happy camper after the weekend’s ICF Sprint World Championships in Racice, Czech Republic.

It was the Pretoria paddler’s first senior world championships and she raced her way into two B Finals, the first over 500 metres and the second over 200m.

‘I raced my backside off in the 200m semi and just managed to steal the final qualifying spot for the B Final,’ she told Team SA. ‘I was very happy with that!

‘Overall I’m very happy with my Worlds and I feel like my training is definitely on the right track! I raced competitively and consistently and achieved everything I set out to achieve at this year’s World Champs.’

But she’s not one to be putting her feet up and the paddling bug is soon expected to be biting again.

‘I’ll take a few days off because it’s been a crazy year! But I know myself…three or four days and I’ll be itching to train again.

‘The work for the 2018 World Champs starts now… and hopefully a 500m A Final will be within my grasp!’

Van Tonder was the only South African woman in Racice racing action.

South African men’s results saw Sean Rice end seventh in the K1 1000m C Final while he also got a gutsy top 10 finish in the grueling 5000m K1 final where he ended ninth in a field of 31 as six paddlers failed to finish.

Chrisjan Coetzee took a fifth spot in the K1 200m C Final and young Stuart Bristow, making his senior sprint world championships debut, took eighth in the men’s K1 500m semi-final III.
