Bolt aiming to leave a final lasting footprint in London

As global athletics legend Usain Bolt prepares to leave the sport on a high in London at this week’s World Championships, there was a last-minute surprise for the Jamaican.

Attending an event hosted by global sports brand PUMA, Bolt was surprised by his parents joining him onstage and presenting him with a special pair of Bolt Legacy Spikes, commemorating his journey as he prepares for his final race.

Wellesley and Jennifer Bolt gifted their son his first pair of spikes back when he began running on the track, so it was only fitting that they were there to hand him the final pair of his professional career as well.

The World Championships get under way on Friday, and South Africa’s own Wayde van Niekerk will be looking to take over Bolt’s mantle as the world’s best athlete when he runs both the 200 and 400m. He’s already the reigning world and Olympic champion in the one-lap event.

The footwear to be worn by Bolt are the Bolt Legacy Spikes, made exclusively for London, and they have design details from key moments in his journey.

The right shoe is labelled ‘Forever’ and has the alpha symbol to represent the beginning of his career. That shoe is in the purple and green from William Knibb High School, where he started on the track. The left shoe is labelled ‘Fastest’, and has the omega symbol to represent the end of his career.

The left shoe is gold, to represent his successes, and the sock liner highlights his major achievements since 2002. The tongues of the spikes are embossed with Usain’s signature and a depiction of his classic pose. The Jamaican flag is also incorporated to show the love he has for his home country.

‘Usain Bolt has been a transformative figure for track and field, and brought a type of energy that the sport has never seen before,’ said Bjoern Gulden, PUMA CEO.

‘The way he has stayed true to his core messages, family and fans the whole time has been what’s really resonated with people all around the globe. We’re proud to have been working with Usain for so many years now, and our partnership will continue long after his race this weekend.’
