Skhosana starts his 2017 season in France

South African top wheelchair tennis junior Alwande Skhosana jets off this weekend to begin his 2017 season at the Cruyff Foundation Junior Masters in Tarbes, France from 26-29 January.

Eight of the top ranked junior boys and four of the top ranked junior girls will contest the prestigious event, which forms part of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Junior Series.

Only players born on or after 1 January 1999 are eligible to compete in 2017.

Completing the boys’ field are Jef Vandorpe (BEL), Sam Schroder (NED), Martin de la Puente (ESP), Conner Stroud (USA), Ruben Spaargaren (NED), Jucelio da Silva Torquato (BRA) and Ruairi Logan (GBR).

The 16-year-old Skhosana who finished in fourth position at last year’s event said he is primed for this season’s challenge: ‘Last year was my first time playing in the Junior Masters and I didn’t have enough experience to compete at this level but I’m ready now.

‘With all the experience gained last year and the hard work I have put on court, I believe I will bring better results.”

The world No4 junior jets off on Saturday from OR Tambo International Airport with Khotso Matshego.

The tournament will be preceded by a three-day high performance training camp from 23-25 January, aimed at ensuring athletes are prepared for the event.

The Johan Cruyff Foundation, named after the legendary Dutch footballer, was founded in 1997 with the aim of giving children the opportunity to play and be active.
