SA duo up for prestigious world awards

By Mark Etheridge

Rio 2016 Paralympian Shaun Anderson is one of two South African archers up for the annual World Archery awards.

The other nominee is Seppie Cilliers, a member of Team SA at the 2013 World Games in Cali, Colombia and a 2016 World Cup final silver medallist in the compound division.

Voting for the awards, made in six divisions, is a joint effort by a World Archery committee and is open to the public as well. Public voting and the committee is done on a 50/50 percentage basis.

This is the first time in the history of archery that two South African archers have made it to the short list. Voting closes on 31 December this year and the winners will be announced in January.

An ecstatic Anderson said it was very gratifying to be noticed by the archery code.

‘It was an extremely satisfying moment when I learnt of the nomination and that Seppie and I were on the short list for World Archery Athlete of the year.

It’s very humbling and gratifying to be up there with my peers. Every one of them deserve to be there and have worked hard to get there. Like only an athlete will understand, I wish all of them the best.

‘It’s all these small motivations that collectively push you into the direction of the next four years of preparation for the 2020 Paralympics. Thank you World Archery.’

Anderson says he still hasn’t come down from the high of Rio. ‘I returned to South Africa a completely different person. My view on life has been altered for the good forever.’
