Montjane ends season on a double high

South African leading women’s wheelchair tennis ace Kgothatso Montjane put the finishing touch to a magnificent season by edging out her doubles partner Charlotte Famin from France 7-5 6-3 and winning her first Prague Cup singles title, an International Tennis Federation (ITF) level 2 event which ended in Czech Republic on Sunday.
Montjane demonstrated the talent and resilience that had seen her not dropping a set in the tournament and making it a double in Prague as the Limpopo star continued her complete dominance with another immaculate display in the doubles event with partner Famin.
The two joined forces to make light work of beating the Russian pair of Ludmila Bubnova and Viktoria Lvova 6-0 7-6 (2) to bag the doubles title.
The 30-year-old continue to hit her stride in the history books, a month ago claiming another slice of history by reeling in her second US Open Super Series doubles crown in America.
Montjane finished in second place at last year’s event after she lost to Diede de Groot (Netherlands) 3-6 6-2 6-3 in the finals, but she returned to Prague confident of being a victor.
‘It’s an awesome way to finish the year. I finished in second place here in Prague last year and told myself that I want the top prize this year. Ending the season with a win always gives you something to take with into the next year,’ said Montjane.
Meanwhile, in the men’s tournament, South African world No 13 Evans Maripa cruised through to the last two without dropping a set, but was denied the top prize by top seed Takuya Miki from Japan. Maripa was eliminated in the finals on Sunday by the world No 11 in a hard-fought 7-5 7-5 thriller.
Participation in events like these is made possible by the game sponsor, Airports Company South Africa, who has been the major sponsor of Wheelchair Tennis South Africa (WTSA) for the past 11 years.
