SA athletes bring back 19 medals from Brazil

Our small group of para-athletes are on their way back from Brazil with a bagful of valuable metal to “declare” at customs, writes Mark Etheridge.

Thirteen athletes (11 track and field, two swimming) took part in the II Caixa Loterias Athletics and Swimming Open Championships in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

The track and field athletes won a total of 19 medals between them (10 gold, five silver and four bronze) and coach Suzanne Ferreira was a happy coach as the team prepared to head home.

“First of all a great thank you for SASCOC and the OPEX funding for funding this trip! Thank you to all for the effort to make it happen!

“The trip was a huge success, not just only on performances but also for the team to travel together,” she told Road to Rio 2016.

Apart from the medals there was also other recognition of the athletes’ achievements. “The competition used a technical index (percentage of World Record time) to determine the top 10 male and top ten female performances!

“Ilse Hayes [pictured in action during her 200m event here]was the best ranked for SA with a fourth position for the females with a TI of 98.118 % and Fanie vd Merwe was our top male with a fifth spot and a TI of 97.7%. Charl du toit was ranked ninth with a TI of 97.025!”
