SA archers making their mark around the world

Persistent performances on the international circuit mean our archers are becoming a force to be reckoned with, writes Mark Etheridge.

The men’s compound team won gold at the Antalya leg of the World Cup in Turkey two years ago and in the World Cup in Poland recently, missed out gold by a single arrow.

They went down to the United States in a nailbiting 233-232 defeat.

Making up the team were Gabriel Badenhorst, DP Bierman and Patrick Roux. Barbara Manning was manager at the recent World Games in Colombia and now also in Wroclaw, venue for the Polish competition.

And as she looked back on their four extremely close results for the team during their campaign she confirmed the rise of our local archers.

“To lose by one point, so close shows that South Africa has become a team that is much respected by our peers on the international line.

“South Africa were the surprise of the first day, beating world champions India 233-232 in a 24-arrow match. We were leading by one point until the 18th arrow and both teams shot a perfect score of 60 for the last six arrows.”

They also beat France by one point (233-232) in another match that was anyone’s for the taking until the last arrow. Their win over the Netherlands in the semi-finals was the biggest margin of the World Cup at 235-231.

Next up for the South Africans are the World Championships in Turkey (29 September to 6 October) and the team leaves on 25 September.
