Kevin climbs rankings

Kevin Anderson celebrates his highest ATP Tour ranking to date on Monday as he prepares for action in the Valencia Open in Spain, writes Mark Etheridge.

Anderson, who lost to Juan Martin Del Potro in the semi-finals of the Erste Bank Open in Vienna, Austria at the weekend, moved up one position in the rankings to 29th after having moved up from 32nd the previous week.

His rise up the rankings has been consistent throughout the year. He ended last year at 61st on the rankings, at the end of March have moved up to 40th and in October he was up to 30th

One of his aims for 2012 was to try and crack the top 20 barrier and he’s getting closer and closer to that goal. In the two-million Euro hard-court competition in Valencia he has what should be an easy opening round encounter against qualifier Martin Klizan of Slovakia.

Mind you, on the only previous occasion the two have met, four years ago in a Challenger event in Lexington, Klizan walked off court victorious after Anderson had retired. Klizan is currently ranked 113th in the world.

Should Anderson get past Klizan, Slovakia’s second ranked player, there are some formidable barriers ahead of him. First up could be his second match against Del Potro in the space of a week. The Argentinian comes up against Dmitry Tursunov of Russia in first round action.

After Del Potro or Tursunov there could also be a meeting with the in-form Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, the Frenchman having won the Erste Bank Open in Austria on Sunday. Top seed for the tournament is Spain’s David Ferrer, currently sitting fifth on the world rankings.
