Strong showing by SA

Both our men’s and women’s volleyball sides are unbeaten after two days of African Zone VI qualifying action in Tongaat, KwaZulu-Natal.

The three-day tournament will determine which nations join Mozambique at the All-Africa Games later this year.

Our men’s side have posted victories over Mozambique and Botswana while the women beat Zimbabwe and Mozambique.

Wednesday saw our men’s side coming up against Botswana in their second match, dubbed the ‘unofficial final’ of the tournament. The teams were only separated in the mandatory fifth set as South Africa came up tops 26-24 18-25 25-21 23-25 15-9 thriller. The deciding fifth set belonged to Freedom Chiya and youngster Clinton Stemmet who set the court alight with a sparkling victory.

As matters stand only Zimbabwe stand in the way of the South Africans heading to Mozambique in September this year as Zone VI representatives.

Our women’s side took on Mozambique on Wednesday and although Mozambique were mauled by the SA women in straight sets (25-21 25-12 25-12), the former will be represented at the All Africa Games as the host nation.

The South African playmaker extraordinaire, Raycine Sunker had a field day bringing the best out of her attackers as she created a variety of attacking options to put quick points on the board. Despite the set being closely contested up to its half way stage the SA team was never in any danger of losing to the visitors.

Superb performances from Tsepang Tafeng, youngster Cristin Delcarme and skipper Zandy Erasmus swung the set in SA’s favour with a 25-21 margin.

Try as they might the Mozambican team could not contain Tafeng and Delcarme who ran riot when ever they connected with Sunker’s well timed sets.

The SA women wrapped up sets two and three with a 25-12 25-12 score line and now face the high-riding Botswana team on Thursday in the final match in the women’s category.

What are VSA officials thinking when they place such a young player like Christin Delcarme in the senior ladies’ team? Yes this youngster has tremendous skill, is powerful and has stunning potential but she is so young, and the danger is always that players, especially girls, suffer severe burn-out or are prone to injury because we start them out too young. Also consider the implications of this teenager, being around adults! The well-being of this young lady must be considered when selecting players, so that we can extend her future in the sport.
