Teaming up for a toughie

Competition promises to be tough in the women’s team category of the 2010 Contego Wines2Whales MTB race starting in Somerset West on Friday 12 November.

Starting at Lourensford Wine Estate top riders toeing the line will include Cherise Taylor riding with Karien van Jaarsveld, Yolandi du Toit riding with Catherine Williamson, Michelle Lombardi riding with Hanlie Booyens and Erica Green riding with Phelia Burger.

Taylor, one of the country’s leading cyclists, has just this week got engaged to Beijing Olympian and world Under-23 MTB champion Burry Stander.

According to Taylor this will be the first time that she and Van Jaarsveld take on a stage race together.┬áÔÇ£Karien and I get along really well and we are both competitive by nature.┬á I believe we’ll be a superb team.┬áI love the idea of a three-day stage race as it is manageable for a lot of riders. It is long enough to be challenging, while at the same time allowing you to be social. I’ve heard that the Wines2Whales Race features an amazing course.┬áI’m really looking forward to experiencing it,ÔÇØ says Taylor.

Van Jaarsveld agrees that a three-day stage race provides the ideal setting in which to challenge oneself.┬á ÔÇ£The Wines2Whales Race is going to be a great challenge for us.┬áI am a strong endurance rider, while Cherise’s strength is speed. It’s going to be awesome working together as a team.┬á I can’t think of a more beautiful way to finish off the season,ÔÇØ said Van Jaarsveld.

The Wines2Whales MTB Race will see top athletes such as Christoph Sauser (Olympic medalilst), Burry Stander (Under-23 World MTB), Dan Hugo (South African multi-sport champion and top ranked international XTERRA athlete) and Dieter Voigt (Pasella presenter/2007 Mr South Africa) take part in support of the ÔÇ£Ride with the ChampionsÔÇØ initiative.┬á This initiative gave riders the opportunity to bid to compete with one of these four stars.┬á Proceeds of the auction will go towards three very worthy charities, namely the JAG Foundation (an organisation focusing on education and sport development at grassroots), (a charity focusing on bringing sport to the Kayamandi township of Stellenbosch) and local community programmes en-route.
