Mare Nostrum medals for Wendy, Roland

There were more medals for our swimmers in Canet, France on Sunday with Wendy Trott and Roland Schoeman hitting paydirt.

The meeting marked the end of the Mare Nostrum series and showed our swimmers are in good form.

Trott claimed a well-deserved second bronze medal in the series when she placed third in the 800-metre freestyle. She clocked a time of 8:34.25 behind Australia’s Blair Evans (8:33.25) and France’s golden girl Coralie Balmy (8:31.53). Trott had previously also won bronze in the 800m freestyle in Barcelona a few days earlier.

In the 50m butterfly, Roland Schoeman improved on his time from Barcelona to also race to his second bronze of the series. It was one of the tightest races of the night as Schoeman ended in a time of 23.97secs (24.13 secs was his time in Barcelona).
Australian Geoff Huegill was just ahead in second with 23.95 and German Steffen Deibler touched first with 23.89.

The team now heads to Italy to compete in the Sette Colli competiton from 17-19 June before the 21 athletes move to Koper in Slovenia for a training camp from 21 June-2 July in preparation for the important Youth Olympic Games in August and the Commonwealth Games in October.
