Early exit for Grandin

South Africans Natalie Grandin and American partner Abigail Spears went out in the first round of the women’s doubles competition at the French Open in Paris on Monday.

The SA/US combination lost to the all-French combination of Alize Cornet and Aravane Rezai. Although they managed to win a set the final score of 3-6 6-4 2-6 saw Grandin and Spears depart from the red clay courts of Roland Garros.

Grandin now joins countryman Kevin Anderson on the sidelines after the top-ranked South African went down in the first round to Frenchman Edouard Roger-Vasselin.

But unheralded Chanelle Scheepers lives to fight another day. She won her first round clash on Sunday and is scheduled to meet Argentina’s Gisela Dulko on Wednesday.

Meanwhile on home soil the SATA Futures Tournament continued in Durban on Monday.

Last week’s finalist in the ITF tournament, also played in Durban, Amir Weintraub exited as he was beaten by Austria’s Nikolaus Moser. The fourth seeded Israeli went down 7-6 6-4.

Top seeded Theodoros Angelenos had no such problems, the Greek player beating local Hendrik Coertzen 6-4 6-4.
British pair David Rice and Joshua Milton both going through.

Fifth-seeded Rice was too good for Max Raditschnigg of Austria and Milton accounted for South Africa’s Lance Cohen┬á 6-2-6-3.
