Clark’s men aim at Accra

Fresh from their Four Nations success in Russia last week, the South African men’s squad for this month’s Africa Cup of Nations tournament has been released.

The team won the Four Nations tournament in Moscow, thrashing Canada 8-1 in the final, and the 18-strong squad will be hoping to take that confidence into the Cup of Nations tournament in Accra, Ghana.

The tournament starts on July 11 and ends on July 18.

It’s vital that coach Gregg Clark’s boys do well on their African safari as the tournament is also a World Cup Qualifying tournament for the 2010 Hockey World Cup which will take place in New Delhi, India.

The team will come against the likes of Egypt (their strongest opposition in Africa), Kenya, Nigeria and the hosts Ghana.

Western Province and KwaZulu-Natal Coastals have the most representatives in the side, with five players each.

The full squad: Rassie Pieterse (WP), Brendon Botes (EP), Rhett Halkett (Nor)), Justin Reid-Ross (Kzn Coastals), Lloyd Madsen (Kzn Coastals), Gareth Carr (Kzn Coastals), Lance Louw (SG), Paul Blake (WP), Austin Smith (WP), Tommy Hammond (Kzn Inlands), Wade Paton (Kzn Coastals), Lungile Tsolekile (WP), Ian Haley (WP), Lloyd Norris Jones (SG), Miguel da Graca (SG), Julian Hykes (Bor), Marvin Harper (Kzn Coastals), Thornton McDade (SG).
