Vorster a strong medal hope

Limpopo swim sensation Leone Vorster will be among a host of South African tertiary swimmers who will be looking to get among the medals when the World University Games currently taking place in Belgrade, Serbia and ending on July 12.

Vorster, who clocked a SA record time of 1min 59.67sec in the 200 metres freestyle at the Telkom SA National Aquatics Championships in Durban in April this year, will line up for the 100, 200 and 400m freestyle events, and will also be a part of the SA freestyle relay teams as well as the 4 x 100 metres individual medley quartet.

Also in the travelling party is Eastern Province’s Keri Plumstead, who won the 50m breaststroke gold medal at the national championships in April.

In wishing the national tertiary swimmers the best of luck for the event, Swimming SA CEO Shaun Adriaanse said: ÔÇ£Swimming SA, in association with its partners and suppliers, is working hard towards providing sufficient support to our swimmers as far as the build up to the London 2012 Olympics and beyond is concerned, and the World University Games is the perfect platform for swimmers to take their level of performance to the next level.ÔÇØ

The team will be coached by University of the Western Cape swim mentor Cedric Finch with Brett Woods (Stellenbosch University) and Bronwyn Cartwright (Wits) managing the men’s and women’s teams respectively.
