Roland joins suit protest

Roland Schoeman has joined the chorus of those railing against governing body Fina’s decision to allow the controversial swimsuit Jaked01 at the World Championships by going on Facebook to mobilise swimmers around the globe to have their voices heard,

Schoeman, who is aiming for his fourth Olympics when the roadshow moves to London in 2012, was part of the Awesome Foursome that broke the world 4x100m freestyle record in Athens in 2004, and he has also collected three Ol;ympic medals. He remains one of the premier freestyle sprinters in the world and is also right near the top of the pile in the men’s 50m butterfly event.

ÔÇ£I feel the swimmers need more of a voice in swimming. Decisions are being made left, right and centre, without consulting the swimmers. We are the reason and the main attraction behind any swim meet,ÔÇØ says Schoeman. Those interested in joining the quest to have the voices of current swimmers carried further, should answer Schoeman’s call on this new Facebook group.

Schoeman, who has long said that he would support a return to briefs in the race pool, emphasises that the group would not try to work against FINA. ÔÇ£We are wanting to work hand-in-hand with them for a mutually beneficial relationship. There’s a lot of room for improvement and we want to see them [those improvements] come into effect. I think it will be a good thing for both parties.ÔÇØ

Meanwhile, Amaury Leveaux, two-times Olympic silver medallist and the French star of the suits-tainted European short-course championships last December, tells L’Equipe today ÔÇ£I’d rather take a holidayÔÇØ than go to the Rome World Championships next month.

The French sports paper makes a headline of it in an interview with the swimmer conducted by senior writer Benoit Lallement. Leveaux says that if the jaked01 remains the only 100% unmodified poly suit allowed for Rome, he will boycott the 50m free at the worlds.

thanks for taking a stand Roland. this whole swimsuit saga is a joke. FINA is fast losing credibility over this. ban all full length suits and go back to briefs. then there will be no debate over swimmers getting unfair advantages over other competitors
