The Chief Executive Officer of the South African Sport Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC), Tubby Reddy, on Friday expressed his condolences following the death of the 20-year-old bodyboard champion, David Lilienfeld.
According to a statement from Surfing South Africa, the Capetonian was bodyboarding at Kogel Bay beach, between Gordon’s Bay and Rooi Els in the Western Cape, when he was attacked by a great white shark on Thursday. Lilienfeld died at the scene.
“David had a bright future, his commitment at such a tender age to his craft was already evident. His passing is a great shock and loss to all of us,” said Reddy.
Lilienfeld represented South Africa at the ISA World Bodyboarding Championships hosted by Spain at Canary Islands in 2011, where the Proteas bagged two silvers and a bronze.
“On behalf of SASCOC and all its members, I would like to send our sincere condolences to the family and friends of David; you are not alone at this testing time.”
While officials and spectators at the ISA World Junior Championships in Panama, South America will take a minute’s silence in his honour, his family and friends will be remembering him at a traditional “paddle out” at Camps Bay on Saturday April 21.
