South Africa bowed out in the first round of the World Baseball Classic when they were drubbed 14-3 by hosts Mexico. It was another steep lesson for the South Africans, and shows just how far they have to journey to become a force in this Olympic sport.

South Africa’s baseballers must defeat hosts Mexico to progress to the second round of the World Baseball Classic in Mexico City. This is the result of being clubbed 8-1 by powerhouses Cuba in their opening match.

SA primed for World Baseball Classic

South Africa will join teams from 15 other countries to compete in the second World Baseball Classic this month. Players competing in the different teams include 52 Major League Baseball All-Stars and the coach of the South African team, seven-time All-Star Lee Smith, is the pitcher with the third most saves in baseball history.
