Less than two months to go before Christmas but there’s not been much time to think of the festive season here at SASCOC.

The 123rd IOC Session is now behind us and I must say it all went extremely well. It was a great honour to host the IOC President Dr Jacques Rogge and the IOC members to our shores for the Session where the host city of the 2018 Winter Olympics was announced.
PyeongChang got the nod on the third occasion that they had bid to host the Winter Olympics. For our side all the effort put into hosting the Session was made worthwhile by SASCOC and the city of Durban being awarded the Olympic Cup, for our role in actively developing the Olympic Movment.
It’s been a very long road as it took three years to put this Session together. But it’s been extremely rewarding because it was a case of success after success last week.
It was humbling to receive recognition from both the IOC and the IOC President himself. It is a great feeling, a real milestone and an achievement for everyone involved. From the top down, from our President Mr Jacob Zuma to our Sports Minister Mr Fikile Mbalula, the Inter-Ministerial Committee, the Premier of KwaZulu-Natal Dr Zweli Mkhize, the Mayor of Durban, Mr James Nxumalo, SASCOC President Gideon Sam and of course our own IOC executive member, Dr Sam Ramsamy, who has been instrumental in the success of this Session.
Away from the Session we’re well on the way to delivering teams for the Commonwealth Youth Games on the Isle of Man as well as the All Africa Games in Maputo, Mozambique in the upcoming months.
Our netball team did well to end fifth at the World Championships in Singapore. Next up are our swimming and track and field stars who head off for their respective World Championships.

It’s all happening at SASCOC and it just seems to get busier and busier as the year goes on! I recently visited Maputo, host city for the All-Africa Games later this year, and I must say I came back to South Africa pretty impressed.

We’re almost halfway through the second month of the year and as usual there’s been lots going on at Olympic House.
