FINAL STAGES FOR TEAM SA’S GAMES PREP

This week sees Team South Africa in the final stages of preparation for the 2018 African Youth Games which will be held from 18-28 July in Algiers, Algeria.

The final team, which was first announced last month, will be made up of four sporting codes, namely archery, athletics, rugby sevens and hockey 5’s (boys and girls).

Members of Team SA will assemble for their holding camp on 13 July at the Garden Court Hotel, Isando in Johannesburg where they will have their team farewell braai, before departing for Algeria the following day.

The rugby team will however, not join the rest of the team at the holding camp but will depart straight from Cape Town to Algeria as they are busy participating at the U18 Craven week Rugby tournament from 8-14 July in Cape Town.

SASCOC President, Gideon Sam commented: ‘We firmly believe our youth have prepared adequately for these important Games which also act as a qualifier for the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Argentina.

‘On behalf of SASCOC and the Board, we wish these youth the very best of luck at these games, and may you continue to be excellent ambassadors to our country and perform at the best of your abilities.’

Chef de Mission of the games, Leon Fleisher added, ‘I am extremely proud and humbled to be given the chance to lead this youth team to Algeria. I believe that these athletes will be great ambassadors for our country and I wish them well in their attempt to qualify for the 2018 Buenos Aires Youth Olympic Games.

The last edition of these games, which feature athletes in the 14-18 year age bracket, were held in Gaborone, Botswana four years ago while the inaugural Games were in Rabat, Morocco in 2010.

South Africa had no representation at the latter event.
