SA to face Italy at World Cup after loss to Mexico

Cup

By Mark Etheridge

South Africa have wrapped up their pool games at the U18 Baseball World Cup in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada.

They went down to Mexico after earlier defeats to Cuba, the Netherlands, United States and Japan.

Wednesday night saw the youngsters taking on Mexico, the world’s fifth-ranked side in the Cup’s Super Round fixtures.

This was a postponed match, after rain had meant no play was possible on the scheduled date.

Mexico won 14-1, with South Africa’s sole run coming courtesy of Yahya Patel.

Some great fielding and pitching by the Mexicans prevented South Africa getting more than that one run.

With their pool games behind them, South Africa now take on 12th-ranked Italy in the bottom-six division of the Cup competition.
