More honours for Mona as she takes gold in Texas

By Mark Etheridge

Commonwealth Championships gold medallist Mona Pretorius has lifted her way to more weightlifting honours in the United States.

Formerly from Port Elizabeth but now living in Austin, Texas to be closer to coach Dutch Lowy, Pretorius was competing in the Texas state championships, with most of the region’s top lifters in action at the Dallas venue.

And making it a good day at the office was the fact that two of the lifters she coaches (brother and sister Josh and Bella Rivera) also got gold.

‘Bella is one of my little American lifters and is just 11 years old. She qualified for the junior nationals which is a really big thing here in the States. So my club here, Draak Weightlifting, had three competitors and three gold medals.’

Competing in the Under-63 kilogram division, Pretorius pushed a winning total of 196kg, something which gives her great hope for the year, especially after already having provisionally qualified for the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia next year by winning gold at last year’s Commonwealth Championships in Malaysia.

‘I’ve just had my off season and it’s only my second week back in training as I prep for World Championships next year. It’s 10kg under my best weight ever.

‘It’s a very eventful year for me because apart from World Championships, I’m also studying OPEX this year and doing my PHd in sports psychology.’

Good news for her South African fans though is that Pretorius will be back in South Africa this year. ‘Although I’m prepping for worlds this year, my  next big one will be the Arnold Classic and nationals and then the Commonwealth Championships in Australia later this year.’
