SA duo on course for more Futures success

Last week’s champions – South Africans Chanel Simmonds and Lloyd Harris – stayed on course to win their second title in the Digicall Futures international series by reaching the semi-finals of the Digicall Futures 2 tournament on Friday.
The Digicall Futures series consists of three international tennis tournaments played in Stellenbosch.
A Youth Olympian in China two years ago, second-seeded Harris had little trouble in his match against Austrian Phillip Schroll. The 19-year-old South African won 7-5 6-3.
He will now play third-seeded Alessandro Bega in a repeat of last week’s final. Bega reached the semi-final in just more than an hour on court against German Christoph Negritu. The Italian dismissed the sixth seed 6-2 6-1.
The second semi-final is between the top seed Jordi Samper-Montana from Spain and unseeded Brit Jay Clarke. Samper-Montana had a fierce battle against seventh seed Dekel Bar from Israel. They were on court for three hours and 10 minutes before Samper-Montana won 6-7 7-6 6-2.
Clarke also had to battle for more than three hours to beat his countryman James Marsalek 7-6 2-6 7-5.
Simmonds beat lucky loser Liniques Theron from Namibia 6-3 6-2. The top seed will now face American Lauren Embree who is seeded fourth. She had to battle past South African Ilze Hattingh who put up a fierce fight in the match that lasted more than two hours and three sets. Embree won 4-6 6-2 6-0.
The other semi-final will be between third seed Margarita Lazareva from Russia and Germany’s Julyette Maria Josephine Steur, seeded eight. Lazareva beat Brit Alice Gillan 6-3 6-2. Steur managed to stop last week’s finalist American Kaitlyn Christian by winning the match 6-4 5-7 6-0.
