Mighty Mona picks up Commonwealth gold

By Mark Etheridge

Three-time Commonwealth Games competitor Mona Pretorius has struck gold at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in Penang, Malaysia.
Pretorius was part of a small six-strong contingent of South African lifters who took part.
Competing in the Under-63kg category, she picked up a total of 194kg, which gave her automatic qualification for the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia, provisional on national selection criteria.
Formerly of Port Elizabeth, the bubbly brunette powerhouse is currently living in Austin, Texas.
‘I’ve been there for five months now,’  she said shortly after her victory. ‘It has helped tremendously being with my coach Dutch Lowy and being able to go and train with him a lot more often even though he is based in Fort Worth and I’m in Austin – it’s just a three-hour drive.
‘I’m also coaching weightlifting and have my own club in Austin at Redside Crossfit and the gym is a strong Crossfit box.
‘It’s also made a big difference with regard to my training, also the environment is very driven and motivating and pushes me out of my comfort zone working with people who are like-minded but also know what’s the best for all athletes.’
Of her actual competition she said: ‘I had to do that total to win gold and although it’s not a best of mine my goal, together with my coach, was to secure the gold and not chase personal bests.’
Next up for Pretorius? ‘That will be the American Open in December and Texas State Championships in January.’
