SA beat Austria as they march towards title defence in Malta

By Mark Etheridge

South Africa took another stroke towards the defence of their EU Nations Cup water polo title in Malta on Friday.
After a comfortable win over Wales on Thursday Pierre le Roux’s charges accounted for Austria in their second Pool A clash.
Final score in their Valetta victory was 16-6 after a great start which saw them taking the first chukka 5-1 and the halftime lead 12-1.
Understandably they took their feet slightly off the pedal in the third chukka as the Austrians came back but the win sees South African dominating their pool ahead of their two final pool clashes against Lithuania and Ireland.
‘It was a great improvement from when we played each other in last year’s tournament and won 6-4,’ said skipper Le Roux.
’Centre forwards Nardus Badenhorst and Devon Card spearheaded our attack with some prolific finishing and counter attacking.
‘With these two setting up attacking foundations for us we will hopefully be competing for gold on Sunday.’
A product of the Affies class of 2008, Badenhorst was the first nationally capped water polo at his school, in the following year. He’s now a regular part of the SA attack.
And SACS old boy Card is one of the top performing centre forwards, and indeed one of the top players in the country.
He won the prestigious ‘Best Player’ award a the recently completed Currie Cup (SA Championships) where he helped Western Province win the silver medal.
