SA bowlers shine at world championships

Three gold medals out of three at the Commonwealth Games in Scotland last year was great, now another five gold, plus four silver and six bronze at the World Bowls Championship for South Africa’s disabled (physical and sight) lawn bowlers near Wellington, New Zealand!
This means that South Africa’s finest are champions for an amazing fourth time in a row, a stupendous achievement.
Played at the Naenae and Hutt Bowling Clubs, Lower Hutt City,  the team of men and women and their directors finished way ahead of the hosts and England, their nearest competitors.
At the previous world championships on home soil in 2011, the SA team took the overall title; won again in Malaysia in 2003 and in Australia four years later.
SASCOC’s General Manager: Operations, Patience Shikwambana, said: ‘Congratulation and well done to the team. They are our pride and true ambassadors; well done to the bowls family.’
This was echoed by the president of Bowls SA, Allan Freeman, who said: ‘True champions for many years, we salute their courage and skill. We are so proud of their outstanding achievement.’

Final Points: South Africa 121, New Zealand 88, England 82, Hong Kong 66, Scotland  65, Australia 62
Medals: SA: 5 gold, 4 silver, 6 bronze = 15 medals
