100-day milestone for 2014 Commonwealth Games
- Updated: April 14, 2014
Monday, 14 April sees South Africa and fellow Commonwealth countries around the globe marking the key date of just 100 days before the opening ceremony of the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Scotland.
The city of Glasgow hosts the Games which will begin on 23 July and end on 3 August.
Glasgow 2014 marked the milestone with a giant ‘100’ painted onto the grass infield of Hampden Park, Scotland’s national football stadium which will be temporarily transformed into the athletics venue for the Games. Hampden Park is the centrepiece of the Games with more than a thousand track and field athletes going all out for gold and glory in over 48 events during the seven days of competition.
SASCOC are currently extremely busy with team preparations, with the size of Team South Africa expected to be just over 150 with slightly more male than female representatives.
“Unbelievable, but in just 100 days Glasgow will welcome the Commonwealth family to engage in the Games and this will give us a clear indication of how far we have moved from India through London on our way to Rio,” said SASCOC President Mr Gideon Sam.
“With 100 days to go there is still time to polish the rough edges and put in a very good performance in Glasgow. National championships and training camps will help us finalise Team South Africa for Glasgow.
“On this key milestone date, we are more than ready though. Glasgow, here we come!”
Added SASCOC CEO Mr Tubby Reddy: “We are definitely on track with the delivery of Team South Africa to these Commonwealth Games and working tirelessly to ensure everything is on track for Glasgow. This 100-day milestone just reminds us of our obligations to keep on working.”
Next key deadline is that of 31 May for the final team lists, following which, submission of entries by name must be done no later than 11 June.
The team will assemble for the pre-departure camp on 14 July and will attend a farewell banquet on 15 July before jetting out to Scotland the following day.
