Gelant into final as Cremona takes seventh

By Mark Etheridge

Shot-putter Orazio Cremona celebrated his first IAAF World Indoors final with a seventh place on Friday while Elroy Gelant booked his place in a second consecutive Championships final.

Taking part in the Sopot, Poland event, Cremona qualified for the final with a season’s best 20.28-metre effort in the morning and then went on to improve on that with a 20.49 effort in the final, won by American Ryan Whiting (22.05m).

As Cremona was doing his stuff Gelant was involved in a titanic battle in the men’s 3000m heats.

Taking the lead in the early stages, he ended fifth in a time of 7min 45.85.

The first four went through to the final automatically and Gelant, who contested the last championships final in Istanbul two years ago, faced an anxious wait before ending as the second slowest qualifier for Sunday’s final.

Gelant’s heat was won by Kenyan Augustine Choge in 7.44.85

Earlier two-time long-jump champion Zarck Visser opened his long jump qualifying series with 7.93m after an effort that looked impressive but was deemed a no-jump, but failed to improve on that and ended 12th of 17 entrants.

Automatic qualifiying was top eight in the group or a minimum 8.05m, a mark achieved by five jumpers, best of which was Poland’s Adrian Strzalkowski (8.18).
