Applications open for Young Ambassadors Programme, 2014 Summer Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing

The South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) is announcing the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Young Ambassadors (YA) Programme, on the occasion of the second edition of the Summer Youth Olympic Games (YOG), Nanjing 2014.

The primary role of the YA is to encourage the athletes to actively participate in a number of learning experiences that take place in parallel to the competition programme. The IOC believes that the role of each YA is central to the success of the YOG and it offers a unique, life-changing experience to all participating athletes.

SASCOC is in the process of nominating one YA, whose name will be submitted to the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) for consideration.

What the programme offers

Before the YOG, the programme will offer the following:

Motivating and informing the athletes about the TOGs cultural and educational programme;
Being part of your National Olympic Committes (NOC) educational or cultural activities for young people;
Getting involved in the NOCs communication efforts by reporting and /or promoting the coming YOG edition.

During the YOG:

Supporting the Chef de Mission in the YOGs cultural and educational mission;
Facilitating the participation of your delegation in the cultural and educational programme.

After the YOG:

Contributing to the continuation of some CEP activities within your NOC;
Being involved in other cultural and /or educational activities organised by your NOC.

In regards to the implementation and funding of the programme, the IOC will provide a Special Activation Kit to assist the YA develop and implement the programme. The IOC will also cover travel and accommodation costs for the YAs to attend the YA Seminar, which will be held in Nanjing in parallel to the Chefs de Mission Seminar from 26-28 March 2014, as well as the travel and accommodation for the YAs participation in the YOG in August 2014.


The YA seminar will be held in Nanjing from 26-28 March 2014. The main YA programme will run in August 2014.

Selection criteria

As the scope of action of a Young Ambassador lies in the fields of education and communication, he/she must be a good communicator. As his/her audience will be essentially aged 14 to 18, he/she must be connected with young people and legitimate in the sporting world.

An ambassador aged 18 to 25;
Connected to young people (used to supervising or working with young people);
Speaks fluent English and/or French;
Is an active or retired athlete, or has a strong interest in sport;
Significant career in the fields of education and/or culture and/or the arts;
Good communicator;
Available to get involved in the function;
Passionate about sport, culture and education;
Outgoing and keen to making new friends.
