SA duo off the pace in world championships time trial

South African cyclists filled the 42nd and 55th positions respectively in the individual time trial at the World Road Championships in Florence, Italy on Wednesday, writes Mark Etheridge.

The time trial was raced over a distance of 56.8 kilometres and 79 competitors started out.

Germany’s Tony Martin was quickest not he day with a time of 1hr 05min 36.65sec to win his third world championships time trial.

Olympic time trial champion Sir Bradley Wiggins was second, 46sec back with four-time world champion Fabian Cancellara another two seconds back.

Best of the South Africans was Reinardt Janse van Rensburg (42nd) with the 24-year-old Team Argos-Shimano rider’s time trial being 5:52.74 off the pace. The other South African in action was MTN-Qhubeka’s Jay Robert Thomson in 55th place, 6:52.88 adrift.

Said Janse van Rensburg on his Twitter Feed after the race: “Had a loooonng TT today. Not my best, but not totally bad. Some more work to do.”
