Gelant into 5000m final at World Championships

Elroy Gelant made it through to the finals of the men’s 5000-metre track event at the IAAF World Athletics Championships in Moscow, Russia on Tuesday morning, writes Mark Etheridge.

Running in the first of two heats, the Potchefstroom based athlete clocked 13min 25.07 to end sixth in a field of 15 runners.

The heat was won by Ethiopia’s Hagos Gebrhiwet in 13:23.22 from countryman Yenew Alamirew (13:23.48) with Kenya’s Bernard Lagat third in 13:23.69.

The first five finishers in each heat qualified automatically and were joined by the next five fastest athletes. Gelant was 11th fastest of 15 qualifiers.

Turning 27 later this month, he boasts a personal best time of 13:15.87, run in Germany last month.

The second heat was won in a slightly faster time of 13:20.82, by another Ethiopian, Muktar Edris in 13:2.82.

Britain’s Mo Farah, bidding for a repeat of his Olympic 5000m/10,000m double, ended in fifth spot with a qualifying time of 13:23:93. He has already won the 10,000m title earlier in the championships.

Later on Tuesday Victor Hogan will contest the final of the discus event and Cornel Fredericks (the sole survivor of three original SA competitors) will go off in the first of two 400m hurdles semi-finals. The first two in each semi, plus the next two fastest will progress to the finals.
