Team South Africa announced for World Games

A squad of 39 athletes have been named to represent Team South Africa at the 2013 World Games in Cali, Colombia from 25 July to 4 August.

The team will take part in a total of nine sports in the Games, a quadrennial highlight for the non-Olympic sporting codes.

Sports that Team South Africa will compete in are: Aero sport, archery, cue sport, gymnastics, lifesaving, orienteering, rugby sevens, tug of war and waterskiing.

As expected, the bulk of the squad will come from the team sports, namely tug of war and rugby sevens. These codes will feature12 and nine athletes respectively. Lifesaving also has a large complement of 10 athletes.

Two of these sports brought back medals from the last edition of the World Games, in Kaohsiung City, Taiwan, four years ago.

Ryan Brennan (lifesaving) and the rugby sevens side both brought back bronze while Heinrich Sam won silver in barefoot waterskiing. In Taiwan, South Africa competed in 13 sports codes.

Prior to that, at the 2005 World Games in Duisberg, Germany, South Africa brought five medals home, including silver in rugby sevens.

Many of the current squad have already got World Games experience under their belts, and Tania Wimberley, South Africa’s first athlete to compete at the 2009 Games, is now included in a management/coaching capacity in the orienteering code.

So too are Vuyo Zangqa and Neil Powell. They were both sevens rugby players in Taiwan and are now coach and assistant coach respectively.

“The World Games are a true celebration for the sporting codes that don’t get to experience the Olympic Games. However the pride and passion shown by competitors is just as fierce and our athletes will know that they are up against the very best in the world in Cali,” said SASCOC President Gideon Sam.

“This is the perfect chance for our athletes to boost the profile of the codes often perceived as cinderella sports here in South Africa. I have no doubt they will do us proud in South America.”

Added SASCOC CEO Mr Tubby Reddy. “We saw in Taiwan that, just like at the Olympics, every medal is extremely hard fought for. Our athletes who competed in Taiwan previously have been hard at work since then in order to bring honour back to South Africa. The rugby sevens team will also definitely be in the spotlight as well with this code being part of the Olympic family for Rio de Janeiro in 2016.”

Hi there ... gymnastics at World Cup is tumbling and trampoline .. not the same disciplines as at Olympics. Archery is also an Olympic sport but only the recurve bow is used. World Games will use compound bows. Aero sport? I'm stil working on that one. Watch this space! Kind regards .. Mark Etheridge (Road to Rio 2016)

Gymnastics is an Olympic sport. What discipline is this? What is Aero sport? I am sure archery is an Olympic sport? GOOD LUCK TO OUR ATHLETES! MAKE OUR ZAMBUK AND INKOMAZI NATION PROUD! VIVA SOUTH AFRICA!
