Olivier motors to fine 800m win in Moscow

Andre Olivier continued his dream run of form with an impressive victory in the IAAF Moscow Challenge event in Russia on Tuesday evening, writes Mark Etheridge.

Olivier, a member of Team South Africa at the London Olympics last year, looked in control throughout as he hit the line in 1min 44.93sec to take the 800-metre honours.

Victory means that Olivier has now gone sub 1:45 in all four of his races in Europe in less than two weeks.

Giving him a psychological boost was that he comfortably held off 2004 Olympic champion Yuriy Borzakovskiy down the finishing straight as the Russian took the runners-up spot in 1:45.25 ( a season’s best for him).

Belarrusian Anis Ananenka took the field to the bell (50.74sec) at an honest lick in pouring rain and Olivier waited until the final bend before easing out of any trouble and having a clear run-in to the line, the fabled finishing kick of Borzakovskiy unable to make any impression on Olivier. If anything Olivier had an extra little surge in the final few metres to take him clear.

Olivier has yet to go over the 1:45 barrier in all four races. The former World Junior Championships bronze medallist now returns home to recharge batteries before heading back into the fray as his build-up to the 2013 World Championships later this year continues at pace.
