Team South Africa is expected to dominate at the 2012 Zone VI Games in Lusaka, Zambia.

A team of almost 200 athletes – across eight sports – will fly the South African flag at the U20 tournament from 7-16 December. The team will depart from Johannesburg on Wednesday.

The squad gathered in Boksburg on Tuesday, where SASCOC organised all logistic and medical arrangements swiftly before hosting a welcoming dinner.

There were two keynote speakers in SASCOC president Gideon Sam and Team South Africa’s Chef de Mission Moses Ngobeni, who addressed the athletes.

Sam stressed that the squad needed to make the most of this opportunity.

‘There are only so many youth international meetings for you to experience,’ said Sam. ‘This is not a holiday. It is an opportunity for to fall into the grand plan of competing and representing South Africa at senior and bigger competitions, like the Commonwealth Games and the Olympics.

‘This is your chance for to prove yourself and to be ambassadors for your nation. Give your best and do us proud. We expect you to rise through the ranks and to be successful at future events, because of the experience of competing at the Zone VI Games.’

SASCOC CEO Tubby Reddy, who was also in attendance during the welcoming, was positive that the squad will do well in Lusaka.

‘There’s a positive vibe among the athletes,’ said Reddy. ‘We did very well at the last Zone VI Games in Swaziland in 2010. It’s important that we build on that success and continue the momentum.’

In response, Ngobeni urged this year’s squad to do better than the class of 2010.

‘I have waged war in Zambia,’ said Ngobeni. ‘I’ve told the other nations that we are not there just to compete. We are there to do well and win medals.

‘Let’s go out there like soldiers and show the necessary discipline and determination to excel. Let’s go out there and rock Zambia.’
