SASCOC host IPC workshop to plan for Rio 2016

SASCOC are currently hosting a three-day International Paralympic Committee (IPC)workshop at Olympic House in Johannesburg.

Entitled “Maintain the Momentum”, the workshop is for mainly English speaking Paralympic committees from around the African continent.

Jointly funded by the Norwegian Paralympic Committee and the IPC, around 28 delegates are attending the workshop, including Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Angola and Namibia. Basic aim of the workshop is strategic planning ahead of the 2016 Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Key areas covered will be: Building and strengthening partnerships, strategic planning, athlete and sport development, business development as well as public relations.

The purpose of the programme is to draw together NPCs and stakeholders within the Africa region to enable an understanding of the important factors that will take the region to the next stage in their development for the Paralympic movement. It aims to prepare the region for 2016 and to establish a strategic plan for their NPC with measurable stagedoutputs.

Another goal is to ensure that NPCs benefit from the impulse of the London 2012 Paralympic Games and use these to further develop the Paralympic Movement at national level whilst raising awareness on the abilities and rights of people with impairment through a well prepared national representation at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.
