Team South Africa named for Zone VI Games in Zambia
- Updated: November 14, 2012
South Africa’s future Olympians will get their chance to shine on the continental stage after the team for the Zone VI Games in Zambia next month was announced on Wednesday.
A sizeable team of just under 200 athletes and accompanying officials, will take part in the regional Under-20 youth event to be hosted in Lusaka, Zambia from 7-16 December, 2012.
The bulk of the team will come from athletics (58, including 15 athletes with disabilities) and swimming (38).
A total of eight sports will be contested. Apart from athletics and swimming these are basketball (men and women), boxing, football (men and women), judo, netball and tennis.
Said SASCOC Chief Executive Officer Mr Tubby Reddy: “These are our stars of the future. It’s events like the Zone VI Games where we groom them for greater things on the international stage. On this occasion it’s against our regional neighbours but we are expecting many of them to go on and compete on the global stage one day.
“Many of these young athletes will be venturing out of the country for the first time and a trip like this will be of invaluable experience in broadening both their sporting and cultural experience.”
South Africa have dominated the Zone VI games down the years and this will be the fifth version of the event. At the last Games in Swaziland two years ago, Team South Africa comfortably led the medals table with 105 medals, one more than they won at the previous Games in Potchefstroom in 2008.
Some of the codes feature athletes who were also part of the squad for the Zone VI Games in Swaziland. And the para-athletics squad will be boosted in a coaching capacity by Fanie van der Merwe and Duane Fortuin, who were both part of the 2012 London Paralympics team.
Athletes that make up the team for Zambia were submitted by the various National Federations and all ended in the top three in South Africa after their respective national championships.
Heading up the team will be Chef de Mission Moses Ngobeni while project manager will be Patience Shikwambana who has previously served as Chef de Mission at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, and most recently, the London Olympics.
The full team to travel to Zambia is:
