SASCOC on swimming allegations

The South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) on Tuesday issued a statement surrounding the media interest in 100m breaststroke gold medallist Cameron van der Burgh and his alleged ÔÇ£illegal extra underwater kicksÔÇØ during his world record-breaking swim at London 2012.

Chef de mission at London 2012, Ms Patience Shikwambana, said she had spoken with the manager of the aquatic squad, Shaun Adriaanse, who is also Swimming SA’s chief executive officer and she said there was no cause for alarm.

ÔÇ£It’s clear and simple. There is really no point in commenting on media reports. Suffice to say we haven’t been informed by [swimming governing body] Fina of anything untoward and neither have we heard anything from the International Olympic Committee.

ÔÇ£We are disciplined members of the IOC but there has been no discussion with them on this matter. As Team South Africa we’re still working hard in the final week of these Olympics and there is a tremendous spirit in the camp.ÔÇØ

As of Tuesday night, South Africa were sitting pretty on the medals tables with three golds and one silver and the promise of more to come during the week.
