President’s Voice – Gideon Sam
So the time has finally arrived! My “informants” tell me that our Olympic team has arrived safely in London.
Now that may sound funny but it’s actually so relieving because the last past weeks have been really hectic. All the preparations to get the team to London had to be meticulously checked by the staff at Olympic House.
The managers, coaches and other team officials had to workshop their roles. All this was done to obviously ensure that the athletes get the very best support so that they can focus on performing.
The highlight of this period has been undoubtedly been the massive support for the team from the South African public. This was a revelation because we were under the impression that they have forgotten about what the Olympics stand for.
There was a surge in the support for the team, culminating in the massive send-off organised by LeadSA at OR Tambo on Thursday. We are forever grateful for the messages of support for the team.
The athletes were also pleasantly surprised by the warmth with which the SA public received them. Many of them started believing the target set for this campaign.
And don’t judge me just yet but the 12 medals do not seem to be so impossible to get, judging by their comments on air and in the print media.
Watching it all come together was such a fuzzy feeling. Now that the athletes are in London, let us all say: Let the Games begin…..we are in a hurry to get our medals and come home to celebrate them with the entire nation.
