SA team move up

Jacques Janse van Rensburg was the best South African finisher at Thursdays’ seventh stage of the Tour of Langkawi in Malaysia, writes Mark Etheridge.

The young MTN-Qhubeka rider ended 12th in the stage, just 13 seconds down on Italian Marco Canla of the Colnago-CSF Inox team.

It was Canola’s biggest win of his career in the 215.8 kilometre stage between Bentong and Kuantan, the longest stage of the 10-leg tour.

Janse van Rensburg and Rwandan team-mate Adrien Niyonshuti had been part of a 16-strong breakaway group but only the former was able to stay up with the pace till the final stages.

On the GC (General Classification) standings it’s Dennis van NIekerk who is best of the South African based MNT-Qhubeka outfit and he lies 4min 33sec off the pace with ace climber Jose Serpa of Colombia out front. Team-mates Jani Tewelde (Eritrea) and Janse van Rensburg are 18th and 21st respectively.

But Van Niekerk’s team is more than holding their own in the team classification and have moved up to third spot, 13min 36sec behind leaders Androni Giocattoli.

Friday’s eighth stage is a 100.8km dash from Pekan to Chukai. The tour ends on Sunday.
