Philippa’s solid showing

Paralympic equestrian rider, Phillipa Johnson had another solid showing on the international circuit this weekend, writes Mark Etheridge.

Riding Verdi she competed at the CDN Zandhoven dressage event in Belgium and ended eighth out of a class of 17 with a score of 64.60%.

“I’m pleased to report that it was much better than last week,” Johnson told Road to London 2012. “Verdi had a few issues about light under the door at A but besides that we rode a clean test. That was my goal, as I said to Chris [Haazen, her trainer], once we can ride a clean test we can start looking at dotting the i’s and crossing the t’s.”

Johnson also gave testimony to the success of SASCOC’s OPEX high performance support system for prospective Olympic and Paralympic medallists. “It’s a big difference. What took me six years to achieve with Benedict [her previous horse], I have achieved in seven months with Verdi.

“Yes, a lot of blood, sweat and tears went into this bit of work but it’s also very much due to the funding.”
