Raiders rule IPT again
- Updated: August 21, 2011
Two goals by Gareth Carr and a deflection from Taine Paton gave the KZN Coastal Raiders a 3-1 victory over Western Province in the final of the SA Men’s Hockey Interprovincial Tournament at Kaspersky Park in Randburg on Saturday.
WP midfielder and SA captain Austin Smith netted a penalty corner to make the half-time score 1-1 .
Carr had a hand in every Raiders goal in what was a superb team effort by outstanding captain Lloyd Madsen and head coach Ryan Hack’s squad, an effort that brought the Durban lads their third consecutive SA men’s hockey title after consecutive triumphs in 2009 in Pietermaritzburg and last year in Port Elizabeth.
The two penalty corners that Carr scored were examples of exquisite timing from a well-oiled penalty corner machine, while player of the tournament Paton’s goal after the initial pass from Carr to outstanding striker Marvin Harper epitomised the understanding these players have developed over recent seasons.
The bronze medal went to Southern Gauteng after their 3-1 win over Northern Gauteng Blues while KZN Inland beat Eastern Province 4-2 in the play-off for seventh and eighth places. The result leaves EP relegated to next year’s B Section.
Free State won the B Section final 7-4 against North West and were promoted to the A Section in 2012.
The player of the tournament was KZN Raiders midfielder Taine Paton, the goalkeeper of the tournament award went to his goalkeeper team-mate Gowan Jones, the save of the tournament was made by Witwatersrand keeper Michael Smith, the goal of the tournament went to pacy Western Province striker Lloyd Norris-Jones and the team’s fair play award was won by KZN Inland.
