Free State hit six
- Updated: August 16, 2011
Two hat-tricks saw Free State scoring the most goals in Monday’s B Section (second division) opening round action in the SA Men’s Interprovincial Hockey Tournament at Kaspersky Park in Randburg as they beat the Southern Gauteng Nuggets 6-1.
Coach Des Donald’s well-prepared Free State side displayed good ball speed and elusive movement in their 6-1 win after the Bloemfontein-based lads had led 3-1 at half-time.
In Tuesday’s opening round in the elite A Section, Pool A sides KZN Coastal Raiders, the two-time defending champions, face KZN Inland, Pool B teams Western Province, third last year, meet WP Peninsula, Pool B outfits Northern Gauteng Blues (last year’s finalists), face Eastern Province before Kaspersky Southern Gauteng, fourth last year, go head to head with Witwatersrand at 4pm.
Free State scored through two hat-tricks against the Nuggets with the lively Lukas Odendaal and intuitive Jarryd Patrick both getting on the scoresheet three times. Indeed the goal-hungry Patrick came off the subs’ bench in the 14th minute in this sport of rolling substitutions and in 43 minutes game time he had found the back of the net on three occasions. Kyle Marks was the only one on the scoresheet for Nuggets.
A mark of Free State’s effectiveness in their build-up was that all six goals came from field play with the majority coming from inside the nine-yard area, which is the hallmark of the world’s best hockey teams.
North West enjoyed a 5-0 win over Southern Cape after leading 1-0 at the changeover with Jardus Smith bagging a brace and the rest going to CP de Beer, Tarquin Bishop and Johan Jacobs. SA Country Districts drew 1-1 with Eastern Gauteng, the goals going to Berto Basson (SACD) and David Fink (Easterns) before the break.
KZN Inland B beat Southern Gauteng Shumbas 3-2 in the late game with their goals going to Edric Pascoe, Michael Craig and Grant Christie, while Reza Rosenberg got a brace for Shumbas.
