SA silvers in Poland

Six South African athletes were in action at the 47th annual Janusz Kusocinksi Memorial track and field meeting in Poland at the weekend with two silver medals to show for their troubles.

National 400-metre champion last year, Ofentse Mogawane took silver in the 400m final with a 45.78sec clocking, behind Britain’s Robert Tobin (45.72). And then in the 100m hurdles United States-based Lehann Fourie had yet another solid showing with a sub 13.60sec clocking, writes Mark Etheridge. On this occasion he ran 13.58 as he was just pipped to the tape by Poland’s Artur Noga. Fourie had earlier won his heat in 13.83.

Sprinters Hannes Dreyer and SA champion Simon Magakwe were also in action. Dreyer clocked 10.31 for fourth spot in the 100m dash.

And he was followed home in fifth by national 100m champion Simon Magakwe in 10.38sec. The race was won by Kim Collins of St Kitts and Nevis in 10.20.

Earlier Dreyer had ended fifth in his heat with a 10.52 return while Magakwe was third in his heat (10.56sec).

Dreyer then combined with Magakwe, PC Beneke and Thuso Mpuang to end third in the mens’ 4x100m relay with a 39.94 combined time, behind Poland (38.84) and the Czech Republic (39.53)
