Murray makes merry

Top duathlete Richard Murray could not have picked a better send-off on his next international sojourn than by winning the Momentum I-flex duathlon in Port Elizabeth at the weekend.

Murray, Brand du Plessis, former 1500-metre track specialist Johan Pretorius and Michael Davidson quickly established a lead over the rest of the field, covering the first 5km run in around 15:40.

Once on the 40km bike-leg, Pretorius was dropped very quickly as attack after attack was launched in the first 15km. At 18km Murray attacked again on a small incline and was able to drop Davidson, but du Plessis hung on. The duo then working together came into T2 with a 3min lead on Davidson.

Murray was ruthless and opened the first kilometer of the 2.5km final run leg with a 2.40km and dropped du Plessis. Murray covered the final leg in 7.52 to be the only athlete to break 8 minutes and cross the line in 1.23;27 ÔÇô some 40sec ahead of du Plessis who was a further 3min in before Michael Davidson.

Carlyn Fischer had a battle royale on her hands with Carla van Huysteen in the women’s race. The two were neck and neck until Fischer was finally able to break away with effect in the final 2.5km run.
