Kevin into second round

Kevin Anderson has roared through to the second round of the $3,645,000 Sony Ericsson Open tournament in Miami, United States, writes Mark Etheridge.

This after he beat Russia’s Nikolay Davydenko in straight sets in a battle between two players ranked 40th and 42nd respectively on the ATP Tour world rankings list.

Anderson won 6-4 6-3 in a match lasting 1hr 18min and surprisingly for him, only managed to hit five aces compared to Davydenko’s two. The double fault count was shared at 2-2.

The South African now comes up against 24th seed Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain in the second round. The two have never faced each other in any level of competition. Just for making the second round Anderson will have pocketed a handy $7,000.

Anderson will be encouraged by his start to the tournament after losing to qualifier Michael Russell in the first round of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, California earlier this month.

“It was a disappointing match for me,”Anderson told Road to London 2012. “Anyway those matches sometimes happen and you just have to learn from them and move on. So I’m really looking forward to the Sony Ericsson.

“After this tournament the clay-court season starts and I’ll be heading to Monte Carlo a week later,” said Anderson.
