Brand burns off rivals
- Updated: March 1, 2011
He may have struggled with injury and illness in 2010, but that seems to be a thing of the past as Brand du Plessis decimated the field at the first of the 2011 Momentum Health I-Flex Duathlon series races at Johannesburg at the weekend.
The first of the six races at the Waterfall Estate was an off-road event. Du Plessis went to the front on the first 5km run leg and entered T1 with a 33-second lead over Jean Pierre Ten Napel and from there just kept on moving away.
Du Plessis needed just over an hour (1:01;30) for the 30km mountain bike leg and covered the final 2.5km in 8:32 for a winning time of 1:24;39.
Despite off-road not being her favourite surface, Andrea Steyn was also way too strong in the women’s field. After the first 5km run, Steyn had 40sec on Alae Brand with Susan Don Wauchope a further seven seconds back.
Steyn’s┬á lead over Riana De Lange was a minute and three minutes ahead of Carla Rowley. The bike leg was where Rowley was hoping to make up ground, coming from a cycling background, but the minute she ate into Steyn’s lead was never going to be enough and she lost further time on the 2.5km final run.
Steyn ended up winning the first of the National Duathlon series races ahead of Riana De Lange and Carla Rowley, with Brand finishing fourth overall.
